The closest match I could find for Popular Science's geometric sans serif logo is FF DIN Schriften Black. There are some alterations, so I'm not completely certain that is the typeface, but it's really close. Assuming that there has been alterations, I really love the idea of taking and existing typeface and really making it your own. The type in this is bold and eye grabbing, but does this without taking away from the rest of the cover.
Also in this issue was this slab serif article headline. It interesting how they were able to place the type with the scene with all the added depth you would imagine. This magazine details new and interesting things coming out of the vast world of science, or in this case, a problem that exist and how science can be used to fix it.
Both of these examples are simple examples of type, but used in interesting ways and novel ways. I would love to customize a typeface to better fit my needs in the future similar to how they did.
