Citizen Slab is a slab-serif (as the name implies) created by Joel Felix that is available for free on his website. Bold slabs and a wide body bring memories of classic fonts which are contradicted by its uniquely rounded forms. Felix was inspired by trip to Boston which he says "stirred up a strong feeling of patriotism" and set off to develop a typeface which embodied that sensation.
Some of my favorite features include elongated counters seen in the R and Q and playful finials that curve outward and rest in an unusual fashion. He also includes stylish variations for a good portion of the lettering. I have a feeling that the next presidential candidate that takes advantage of social media will find inspiration in Citizen Slab. It's reminiscent of time-tested fonts and has a uniquely modern design all to its own and best of all it's free!
