StartPage

I chose this advertisement from InfoWars magazine, a news radio show, website, and recently a magazine as well. It's basically a news source that's willing to cover topics the mainstream media wont dare touch.

The typeface in the ad is a heavy sans serif in orange and white, all caps. There is a figure of a person that is constructed of different words that might define them as an individual, such as: "religion, income, thoughts, family, age, ect." The words are distorted here and there to make them into the shape of a person.

The add is aimed at people who use google, yahoo, or bing on a regular basis, which is pretty much everybody. What many users of these websites may not realize is that every search they enter is being recorded and linked to an ip address. After a few hundred searches this information can be compiled and used to build an accurate personality profile of that user, wether they like it or not, thus the human figure made of words they search for. Startpage is an alternative search engine that will not store information on its users.

The type is very blocky and heavy throughout the ad. It's extremely easy to read and catches the magazine reader's attention with ease. The type within the human figure, since it's distorted to fit the shape, is a bit wavy and fluid in shape. This creates an interesting contrast between the type within and without the human figure. Combined, it makes for an eye grabbing and interesting advertisement.

I'm pretty interested in using type to construct images that look good, and can also be read rather easily. This is something I am going to use one day to build images like that.
