Entertainment Weekly

For my magazine I chose Entertainment Weekly. I'm a huge movie and TV buff and have a subscription. I figured I would delve deeper into a magazine I read all the time, but never notice the design elements at work.

Entertainment Weekly is a weekly magazine that publishes stories about current trends in entertainment (i.e.: Movies, TV, books, games, shows, etc.). It offers insight into upcoming movies usually with interviews of the cast/director as well as reviews on current entertainment.

The article I chose is about actress Leslie Mann and her role in This is 40, the newest comedy from Judd Apatow (Sorry for the awkward text showing through). The title spread does a good job of connecting the picture at the left with the type on the right. Not only are the colors similar, but Bodoni (the typeface I'm almost positive that's used) helps call attention to Mann's femininity. It also is a nice contrast to EW's commonly used sans serif typeface that's more techno and contemporary. Bodoni is a great display typeface and in this instance it is being used in one of the best ways possible. It catches the readers eye and immediately draws him/her in. The typeface is continuously used through out the article in the drop cap and in the sub-article about the movie's music. The actual title its self also uses clever wordplay.
